The Week in Hacking

This week has seen a number of incidents related to hacking and the unauthorized access of information. In some cases, personal information has been compromised, in others, system administrators were able to take their networks down before anything was badly damaged. Following the recent PSN hack, which brought down Sony's systems for over a month and put many users' payment information and personal details at risk, the public eye is very much on hacker activity -- so here's a summary of what's been going on this week.

LulzSec On a Rampage

Hacker collective LulzSec, or as it calls itself, "the world's leaders in high-quality entertainment at your expense," has so far taken down three sets of servers today -- those belonging to CCP's EVE Online, Escapist Magazine and Minecraft.

Study: games increase aggression

According to researchers at the University of Missouri, scientists have been convinced for years that violent video games caused increase levels of aggression, but this had never been conclusively tested through experiments. A recent study found that players of violent games became desensitized to violent images, and that this in turn led to an increase in aggression.

Sony hacked again

Reuters reports that So-Net, the Japanese Internet service provider part of Sony, has been attacked by an intruder who stole virtual points from account holders worth 100,000 yen, or approximately $1,225.

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer has responded to critics of Sony's week-long delay between the PSN hack and notifying customers of the problem.

Sony accuses Anonymous

Sony has accused Anonymous of involvement in the recent PSN and Sony Online Entertainment hacks. The company's justification for this is a file planted on one of the hacked SOE servers which was named "Anonymous" and contained the words "We are Legion," a common sign-off for the group.

New MS and Sony consoles in 2014?

According to anonymous sources who spoke with Kotaku earlier today, the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles shouldn't be expected until 2014. One insider believes that "both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better."
