Visionstream has signed a $62.5 million contract with VicRoads to deliver an electronic highway management system along Melbourne’s M80 Ring Road freeway.
The network service provider will be responsible for designing, supplying, constructing, commissioning and maintaining the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which will cover 38 kilometres of the road from Laverton North to Greensborough, Victoria.
The ITS will manage traffic flow and prevent congestion by monitoring traffic flows using road sensors, automatic control of vehicle entry onto the freeway, managing speed limits and updating the electronic message boards with real-time information such as traffic conditions and travel time.
“Visionstream is pleased to provide the technology, expertise and project management skills to modernise this critical part of Melbourne’s road network," Visionstream general manager, Allan Bradford, said in a statement.
In December 2011, the network service provider entered into a $19 million deal with NBN Co to build the first stage of the transit network following a tender process.
The transit network is comprised of rings of backbone fibre-optic cables that will connect NBN Co's central hub to fibre access nodes.
