50% of Australian Companies Keep Their Laser MFPs for More Than Four Years, Finds IDC

 • 15 October, 2004 14:46

NORTH SYDNEY, October 15th, 2004 - IDC has recently completed the fifth study in the Buying Behaviour and Trends report series covering the local enterprise (250+ employees) market titled, "Business Selection Criteria for Multifunction Environments." This study focuses on both the inkjet and laser multifunction printer (MFP) vendor preference, market trends and forecast analysis affecting the enterprise market in Australia.

The key findings from the study where that 50% of survey respondents indicated they had a life cycle of over four years for their laser MFPs, and that over a third of the same respondents indicated they had purchased directly from vendors over the past twelve months.

Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst noted, "The feedback from Australian IT executives is very significant as half of survey respondents stated they have a four year life cycle for their laser MFPs. In addition, 30% of respondents indicated that they planned to hold onto these devices for five or more years."

"Whilst the MFP market is currently experiencing strong growth, the longer life cycle that IT executives have planned for their laser printers is an important consideration. IT executives still tend to view laser MFPs as being an expensive, but durable/reliable investment which helps to lengthen the life cycle of the devices. Vendors will need to focus on the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) story, value added services, lower cost per page ratios, and service & support for the end users to help combat this trend," added Mr. Sager.

Loretta Pein, Senior Analyst, commented that, "In contrast to the survey respondents feedback regarding single-function printers, a significant portion of respondents (over one-third) indicated that they purchased their MFPs directly from the respective vendors. This is an important consideration for vendors in their channel strategies and product positioning."
