~ Native FICON Connectivity Option for V-Series Shared Virtual Array Family Lowers Total Cost of Ownership for Mainframe Disk Customers ~

SYDNEY Australia - Nov. 5, 2003 - StorageTek's V-Series of virtual disk storage solutions has enabled customers all over the world to do more with less. Now they can do it virtually anywhere.

StorageTek® (Storage Technology Corporation, NYSE:STK), the storage services and solutions expert, today announced the availability of the StorageTek V2Xf Shared Virtual Array® (SVA™), the newest addition to StorageTek's V-Series family of virtual disk storage systems. Designed for native FICON connectivity in z/OS (MVS) and z/VM environments, the V2Xf extends the benefits and advanced capabilities of StorageTek's popular V-Series virtual disk system to provide customers with greater flexibility to select the right SVA connectivity platform for their enterprise computing environments. The release of FICON connectivity will set the stage for the future release of Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) and Multiple Allegiances (MA) enhancements on the SVA for the mainframe environment.

"StorageTek's Information Lifecycle Management™ strategy allows our customers to apply the right mix of hardware, software and services to information at each stage of its lifecycle," said Philip Belcher, Managing Director for StorageTek Australia / New Zealand. "By providing our customers with the full breadth of connectivity options for our premier V-Series storage systems, we can tailor storage management and data protection infrastructures for seamless integration and maximum performance in both mainframe and open systems environments."

"StorageTek has been a pioneering force in virtual disk storage technology since it introduced its advanced Virtual Architecture in 1994," said Dianne McAdam, senior analyst and partner, Data Mobility Group. "The introduction of the V2Xf illustrates StorageTek's commitment to extending the proven benefits and robust capabilities of the V-Series product family to customers requiring high-performance virtual storage and resource optimisation to 'do more with less' in mainframe environments."

The StorageTek V2X SVA family, including the V2X, V2X2 and V2Xf, offers a cost-effective solution for the key IT challenges of protecting, sharing and managing information. Its advanced virtual architecture utilises 100 percent of purchased disk capacity through automated storage management, eliminating the under-allocation and over-purchasing of capacity typically associated with conventional disk systems. IT managers gain the flexibility to accommodate high-throughput applications and meet peak online transaction processing needs without purchasing additional capacity.

The V2X SVA family delivers advanced disk mirroring, replication and high availability capabilities via StorageTek's exclusive Virtual Power Suite™ software. Designed specifically for StorageTek's V-Series, the Virtual Power Suite software enables users to copy, move and protect large volumes of data with unprecedented speed, eliminating thousands of I/Os per second. With StorageTek SnapShot software, users can make instantaneous backups of data sets for disaster recovery applications, offline data processing and application development. The V2X SVA family also enables automatic macro management, intelligent self-tuning, automatic media management and disruption-free configuration changes to greatly simplify storage management, saving time and resources.

The V2Xf features the latest high-performance Seagate 73 gigabyte drives for improved disk drive capacity and scales to deliver up to 11.6 terabytes of virtual device capacity. Equipped with native FICON connectivity, the V2Xf allows customers in mainframe environments to achieve significant data throughput gains and greater cabling distances for data transmission to offsite datacenters for business continuity and disaster recovery applications. In this way, the V2Xf allows customers to protect more data than they could with other enterprise disk systems--and at a substantially lower cost.
