For Immediate Release

VERITAS VISION 2004: Software Building Blocks Enable Utility Computing. Now.

VERITAS launches new products and services

LAS VEGAS – VERITAS VISION™ 2004 – May 5, 2004 – VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTSE) chairman, president and CEO Gary Bloom today opened the company’s annual user conference, VERITAS VISION 2004, reflecting on key accomplishments of the past year, launching new products and services, and detailing plans to further enhance the company’s software building blocks that enable utility computing. The company also recognized a handful of customers with VERITAS “VISIONary” awards for their progression toward utility computing -- a computing model that enables IT departments to align human and capital resources with business needs.

“IT departments are spending too much time and money simply enabling their businesses when they could be differentiating their businesses to better serve their customers,” said Bloom. “VERITAS Software enables IT departments to drive down operational costs while delivering improved performance and availability on a low-cost shared infrastructure.”

“VERITAS is creating a heterogeneous software solution to enable utility computing. The company's solutions address key areas important to IT leaders – ensuring that applications are performing at the highest levels and meeting the needs of customers worldwide for unprecedented levels of data availability. The ability to automate across servers, storage and applications will be crucial to realizing the promise of the utility computing model,” said Nancy Hurley, senior analyst, Enterprise Storage Group. “This breadth and heterogeneity is important because utility computing, in its final form, requires a software layer that coordinates the whole infrastructure and allows it to operate as a single entity while meeting a spectrum of different requirements.”

The Road To Utility Computing Starts With Storage
The move to utility computing will not happen overnight. Many organizations are looking at the storage infrastructure as a logical starting point for their utility computing strategy. VERITAS, with market leadership in storage software, provides an ideal foundation.

Building on that foundation, VERITAS today launched CommandCentral™ Storage 4.0 allowing administrators to discover storage assets, set up policies for management and report on usage (see related press release, issued today.) Information gathered within CommandCentral Storage is managed by CommandCentral Service, providing IT management a business view of the storage infrastructure across the enterprise. This enables effective management of storage to pre-determined service levels and calculation of cost by user, department or application.

Storage… Connected To Servers, Running Applications
Managing storage to a service level is an important step on the road to utility computing, but it’s not the end of the story. If data is available but servers and applications are not then business stops. VERITAS today introduced CommandCentral Availability 4.0 allowing administrators to centrally manage availability of business applications (see related press release, issued today).

Chargebacks, Providing Visibility Into The IT Budget
With key technology acquired from Ejasent Inc. (see related press release, issued today), VERITAS MicroMeasure™ software enables usage-based metering, cost allocation and charge-back billing of all physical and logical data center assets, including application transactions and offers visibility into the entire IT ecosystem.

The Value of Heterogeneity
Most organizations today not only have heterogeneous infrastructures, but VERITAS found that 98 percent of CIOs surveyed prefer a multi-vendor approach to managing their data centers (see related press release, issued today). VERITAS software is available across heterogeneous storage, servers, operating systems, databases, and applications giving organizations the flexibility to create the IT environment that best meets their needs.

VERITAS VISIONary Awards
VERITAS executives will recognize outstanding customers throughout the conference for their unique achievements in advancing and streamlining their companies’ IT operations utilizing VERITAS software. Customers receiving VERITAS VISIONary awards use VERITAS solutions to reduce the cost and complexity of their IT environments while delivering improved business results.

In addition, on May 5, VERITAS will be making significant announcements in the areas of application performance management, strategic partnerships, the extension of global services with tailored consulting practices to meet the emerging needs of customers as they adopt a utility computing model, and a new forum for customers and VERITAS executives to work together to shape VERITAS’ utility computing technology development.

VERITAS VISION 2004 is the leading technology user summit where key system, storage and database leaders from around the world come together to evaluate the latest IT solutions and to develop well-designed strategies to implement utility computing, echoing the conference theme: UTILITY .NOW.
