3COM INTRODUCES NEW ENTERPRISE CORE INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTION FOR VOICE, VIDEO AND DATA APPLICATIONS ON A 10 GIGABIT-READY COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM

3Com’s Highly Resilient Switch 7700R Delivers Industry-leading Price/Performance; Larger Businesses Can Scale Up Networks with Better TCO and Less Complexity

Sydney, Australia, 13 January, 2004 – 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced the highest-performance LAN switch the company has ever offered to the enterprise market, broadening 3Com’s portfolio of enterprise communications infrastructure solutions. As the newest addition to 3Com’s expansive portfolio of LAN switches, the 3Com® Switch 7700R offers the enterprise-class resiliency required by the most demanding customers for campus-wide core applications.

“At Prudential Northwest Properties, we are setting up the new 3Com Switch 7700R as our core switch for managing our most critical application servers, WAN links and all of the 3Com VCX™ V7000 IP Telephony components,” said Sean McRae, CIO, Prudential Northwest Properties. “I trust 3Com to provide high-performance core infrastructure solutions of the highest quality. In addition, they are backed by 3Com’s global service and support. I can go to 3Com for virtually all my enterprise communication needs.”

“The 3Com Switch 7700R enhances our ability to offer end-to-end solutions. 3Com’s enterprise customers are assured business continuity, scalability and investment protection in buying 3Com’s products. 3Com will continue to provide and support extensive network communications solutions above and beyond what most competitors can offer,” said Stanimira Koleva, President Asia Pacific, 3Com Corporation. “Not only does the Switch 7700R deliver advanced Quality of Service and bandwidth management for converged voice/video/data applications, but the delivery of this new product also signifies reaching a milestone on 3Com’s aggressive roadmap of higher-performance, feature-rich infrastructure products.”

The Switch 7700R is part of the modular 3Com Switch 7700 family that was first introduced into the enterprise market in June 2003. With one second fail-over to a redundant switch fabric, the Switch 7700R offers significantly higher availability that is critical for sophisticated enterprise customers with campus backbones supporting many thousands of users. The Switch 7700 family strengthens 3Com’s core offerings for larger organisations that can leverage the LAN infrastructure, along with WAN solutions, for end-to-end convergence, reliability and security.

"Through intensive technical testing, The Tolly Group has verified the outstanding performance of the new 3Com Switch 7700R, which gives 3Com a new competitive edge against comparable products in core switch solutions," said Kevin Tolly, president, The Tolly Group. "The standards-based 3Com Switch 7700R delivers the high switching performance that network managers at medium- and large-sized organisations require."

Also being announced is advanced feature software for the Switch 7700 family switches. BGP4 and IS-IS routing protocol support will give greater scalability for service provider solutions across a metropolitan area network (MAN). SNMP version 3 will further secure remote management, while IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol enhances standards-based resilience across a network.

The local switching on each blade along with a high-performance switch fabric provides up to 96Gbps of performance to address the switching requirements at the core of the network. The Switch 7700 provides campus aggregation that enables 3Com’s XRN™ solutions to scale to many thousands of users. 3Com has been shipping XRN technology for more than a year, resulting in significant customer deployments worldwide. As a 3Com innovation to provide more value to business communications and minimise network outage, XRN technology offers a unique pay-as-you-grow approach to adding more resiliency to a network infrastructure as the business needs more capacity and assured system availability.

Switch 7700 management is a function of 3Com Network Administrator, which began shipping in November. Addressing the needs of larger enterprise customers, 3Com Network Administrator is an enhanced plug-in to the HP OpenView open management platform.
