NetScreen breaks new ground with Deep Inspection Firewall and Security Management Platform introductions

 • 21 October, 2003 10:14

NetScreen Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSCN) today announced a new class of firewall that will help enterprises protect their organizations from increasingly complex application-level attacks. NetScreen’s new Deep Inspection firewall will provide advanced security for key vulnerability points throughout the network, including telecommuter, branch-office and central-site locations.

NetScreen also announced today NetScreen-Security Manager 2004, the industry’s most comprehensive security management platform designed to control and monitor device, network, and security configuration and policies for NetScreen’s line of award-winning integrated firewall and virtual private network (VPN) appliances and systems. NetScreen-Security Manager will allow customers to simplify the management of NetScreen product deployments and ease the allocation of specific management roles and functions throughout an IT organization.

Richard Stiennon, vice president of research at Gartner, Inc., commented, “Because of the new worms, malicious code and cyber attacks that are now targeting application weaknesses and more applications and protocols are tunneling through firewalls, firewalls must provide a wider range of intrusion prevention capabilities along with advanced centralized management functionality.”

NetScreen’s Deep Inspection firewall, which has intrinsic application-level intrusion prevention capabilities, complements proven stateful firewall functionality to significantly strengthen the security posture of an organization. Further, when coupled with NetScreen’s newest management platform, an enterprise can increase management efficiency and reduce overhead and operating costs.

“Development of the NetScreen Deep Inspection firewall and NetScreen-Security Manager 2004 demonstrates our commitment to drive innovation in security solutions and make intrusion prevention a critical part of enterprise network security deployments,” said David Flynn, vice president of marketing at NetScreen. “More importantly, with this new firewall and management platform, our customers can realize greater security, more tightly integrated into their networks, while reducing operating costs.”

Deep Inspection Firewall

The robust security features and innovative intrusion prevention functionality of the NetScreen Deep Inspection firewall can provide protection against more than 250 application-level attacks and protocol deviations targeting key Internet services, such as Web, email and file transfer resources. This functionality is enabled through “deep inspection” into specific traffic for the following protocols: HTTP, SMTP, IMAP, POP, FTP, and DNS, with additional protocol support planned in future releases.

Unlike competing solutions, customers have the option of configuring the deep inspection protection on a per-policy basis for one, several or all supported protocols. The Deep Inspection firewall also provides the flexibility to detect and/or prevent application-level attacks as a customer deems appropriate.

The Deep Inspection firewall builds upon the stateful firewall, VPN, denial of service protection and traffic management capabilities currently available in NetScreen’s integrated firewall/VPN appliances and systems to provide advanced network- and application-level protection. NetScreen devices with Deep Inspection firewall are ideal Internet gateway solutions for deployment at small, remote, branch and/or regional offices where IT resources are often limited and best-in-breed security functionality, logically integrated into a single device and accompanied by central management, can provide incremental security and cost of ownership benefits.

NetScreen-Security Manager 2004

NetScreen-Security Manager 2004 is the industry’s first network security management platform to combine device-, network- and security policy-level control and monitoring while enabling role-based delegation of tasks, responsibilities and access to the system. This can facilitate network and security team collaboration and allow clear definition and assignment of responsibilities for successful security and network architecture management.

NetScreen-Security Manager also provides the ability to manage the device throughout its lifecycle, including deployment, configuration, surveillance, maintenance, and upgrades. Additionally, a new powerful graphical user interface (GUI) provides easy access to, and consistent intuitive display of, device-, network- and security-related data, allowing simple migration from one area of management to another. For example, a security administrator can quickly and easily establish or modify device settings, network configurations and/or security policies without juggling multiple management applications and navigating different GUIs.

NetScreen-Security Manager is designed to meet the needs of IT departments charged with securing highly distributed networks that often face multiple management tasks, ranging from network and device configuration to maintenance of various policies. Each management task is inter-related yet typically addressed by different members of an IT department who often utilize separate, legacy tools to manage their distinct functions. NetScreen-Security Manager 2004 provides the comprehensive management functionality, role-based administration and ability for department member collaboration that is required to efficiently manage complex security networks.

Availability

The NetScreen Deep Inspection firewall will be delivered via ScreenOS version 5.0, the underlying operating system for NetScreen’s integrated firewall/VPN appliances and systems. ScreenOS version 5.0 is planned to be available in November for the NetScreen-5GT, -5XT, -25, -204, -208, and -500, and planned to be available for NetScreen-5200 and -5400 systems in December. NetScreen-Security Manager 2004 is planned to be available in December. Both will be offered as upgrades for current customers with an existing NetScreen support contract.
