LaTrobe University is moving its student management system to the cloud following the signing of a new agreement with TechnologyOne.
Under a new five year deal with the vendor, the university said it is the first in Australia to have its student management system on a true software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform.
Around 36,000 enrolled students and 3,200 full time staff use the system, which was first rolled out in 2006 under the original on-premise contract with TechnologyOne.
Speaking to CIO Australia, Peter Nikoletatos, executive director and CIO at La Trobe University, said the new agreement – called Project Phoenix – will see the university deploy an additional 19 modules to support student administration services.
“At the core of our strategy is the need to fully transform our student experience by providing anywhere, anytime, any device capability, seamless real time integration and flexibility in academic program management.
“We’re committed to ensuring La Trobe students have an outstanding experience, from first enquiry through to employment and beyond,” said Nikoletatos.
The roll-out is part of the university’s Future Ready Strategic Plan, which is built on four pillars – one of which is providing an outstanding student experience.
TechnologyOne executive chairman, Adrian Di Marco, said that all universities, TAFEs and other education institutes experience an extreme peak load on their systems and servers during the enrolment period.
The vendor’s SaaS platform eliminates the need for the university to own, run and manage expensive supporting hardware. This frees up the university to focus on its core business providing a superior student experience and academic support, Di Marco said.
La Trobe joins other universities in using the SaaS solution including the UK’s University of Exeter, University of Lincoln, and University of South Wales.
