ISIS IQ puts warehouse managers in the driver's seat

 • 16 October, 2003 16:04

New SME warehousing tool from Sun Microsystems, Microlistics, Frontline and Symbol boosts turnaround and productivity by up to 50 per cent

SYDNEY, 16 October, 2003 – A new warehousing solution for small and medium sized-businesses puts managers in the driver’s seat, to make the right stock control decisions at the right time.

Outsource warehouse or third party logistics (3PL) operators, as well as cold stores, food distributors and retailers running their own warehouses, are facing increasingly complex supply chains, as customers demand delivery of smaller quantities, more frequently to push storage costs back to the warehouses.

Supply chain execution technology provider Microlistics, Frontline Systems Australia and Sun Microsystems have come together to deliver a comprehensive solution to meet the needs of the SME and 3PL markets.

The solution, ISIS IQ, is a complete logistics and warehousing solution allowing businesses to cut supply chain complexity and accommodate customers who place smaller, more frequent orders.

“The business intelligence delivered by ISIS IQ can help SMEs turn around orders up to 50 per cent faster, boost productivity by up to 50 per cent, increase space utilisation by up to 10 per cent, and reduce the cost of carrying inventory,” says Paul O'Connor, Director Partner Sales for Sun Microsystems Australasia

“ISIS IQ also meets the need for more flexible, sophisticated systems to deal with the needs of a growing, changing client-base,” O'Connor says.

ISIS IQ delivers accurate, real-time inventory information using ISIS WMS software from Microlistics and smart radio frequency (RF) scanners from Symbol Technologies, which display instructions to warehouse staff. The system is driven by the intel-based Sun Fire(tm) V65x servers, provided by system integrator Frontline.

ISIS IQ gives managers hands-on command at the warehouse, to get the right products to the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity.

“The system reduces the guesswork and paperwork operators have to do, allowing them to use their expertise elsewhere,” says Phil Barrett, Business Development Manager for Microlistics.

“We recognise that companies view their supply chain as a key to competitive advantage, and see investment in it as not only improving customer service but also generating new business,” Barrett says.

Delivering results

ISIS IQ can be deployed within 30 days, and delivers a rapid return on investment.

At its heart is the ISIS Warehouse Management System (WMS) chosen by customers including Victoria’s largest privately-owned cold storage complex, AB Oxford.

“ISIS allows us to operate with inventory accuracy levels between 99.91 per cent and 99.98 per cent, and it’s flexible enough to meet each customer’s inventory tracking requirements,” says Paul Fleiszig, Director of Finance and Operations at AB Oxford.

“Products can be tracked by date of receipt, case, item, pallet ID, lot number, or any other method preferred by the customer. And if you compare it to a manual system, ISIS saves the company 50 per cent in the time that it would otherwise take to pick, pack and ship products,” Fleiszig says.

System integrator Frontline says the creation of ISIS IQ marks the first time that Sun, Frontline, Microlistics and Symbol, all leaders in their fields, have come together to create a solution for the SME market.

“When a product comes into the warehouse, a handheld or vehicle mounted RF scanner fires the barcode data straight to the ISIS WMS application, which decides where to put it depending on factors such as how fast it moves, and tells the operator via a display screen on the scanner,” Bill Frangeskakis, Frontline’s Victoria State Manager.

“When an order comes in, the operator can see via the easy-to-use menu exactly where to find the product, how much to take, when to take it, and even which door to take it to,” Frangeskakis says.

Symbol Technologies says its hand-held PDT6846 portable data terminal with WLAN connectivity is a best-of-breed product, rugged enough to withstand at least a one-metre drop onto concrete.

“The ISIS IQ solution brings smaller Australian companies the benefits of real-time mobile computing that would normally be out their reach, providing efficiencies and competitive advantages,” says Michael Seekamp, Sales Director for Symbol Technologies, Australia and New Zealand.

The ISIS IQ is now available from Microlistics, which provides 24/7 application support, installation and implementation services, project management and software maintenance; with hardware support from Sun.
