Box Hill Hospital has completed its core ICT infrastructure rollout, where it is improving interaction between clinicians and their patients at Eastern Health’s newly redeveloped facility.
The new IT infrastructure – part of a $447.5 million revamp funded by the Victorian government – was deployed by NEC.
To improve its services, the hospital has built a business service centre, which interfaces with critical functions at the hospital, such as ‘code blue’ patient enquiries and messaging. Code blue is used to indicate an emergency situation where a patient is experiencing respiratory or cardiac arrest.
The centre also serves as a central point for staff to report holiday leave, on-call schedules, duress and security incidents. It replaces an old paging system.
NEC led the design, procurement and implementation of the building’s ICT network, phone system, and data centre, in a project that began in April 2013. The hospital is using a Cisco Unified Communications solution and Cisco data centre architecture.
NEC also redesigned the switchboard consoles to improve efficiency and offered a solution that replaced the hospitals legacy paging system with a fully converged messaging platform.
The hospital has also rolled out a digital display and signage system, that includes displays, touchscreens and digital communications software embedded signage players.
These panels have also been installed at operating theatres at the hospital to assist surgeons and theatre staff with live screened detail of an operation. Training and teaching areas at the hospitals also include large format touchscreens to improve the teaching environment.
