The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is warning Australians not to respond to an email which claims that someone tried to access their personal bank account.
The email (PDF), which uses the RBA logo and contact details, goes on to say that the customer’s account has been blocked until they can verify their details by clicking on a website link.
An RBA spokeswoman told Computerworld Australia that people should contact their bank “straight away” if they receive one of the emails.
“This is a scam and they should not interact with the website at all,” she said.

The spokeswoman added that scammers often use the RBA’s details to make their emails seem more realistic.
“It is important to remember that the RBA will never ask you for any personal details, transfer personal funds into an account or ask for a fee to allow money to be transferred into or out of Australia.”
The RBA has advised people to visit the Australian Securities & Investments Commission's MoneySmart website for further information about financial scams in Australia.
