Verizon unveils enterprise cloud service

Public beta to launch in Q4, Australian release date still unclear

Verizon has launched a hosted infrastructure and cloud storage service that it claims will provide users with more control over resources in the cloud as it takes aim at Amazon’s dominance in the market.

The service includes Verizon Cloud Compute, a pay-as-you-go computing service, and Verizon Cloud Storage, an object-addressable, multitenant storage platform accessible from anywhere on the Internet.

Verizon claimed the service is “fundamentally changing how public clouds are built".

"It combines a generic public cloud with an enterprise-level service that gives users control over virtual service provisioning," Verizon said.

Verizon Cloud Compute lets users determine and set virtual machine and network performance.

Users can also configure storage performance and attach multiple virtual machines. Previously, services had pre-set configurations for size and performance with little flexibility regarding virtual machine and network performance and storage configuration, Verizon said.

The public beta for the Verizon Cloud will launch in the fourth quarter of this year. It is unclear when the service will be available in Australia with Verizon confirming it is examining which nodes across the Asia Pacific region to roll out in 2014.

Access to these services will initially be limited to a few hundred new users per month during the public beta program, Verizon said. The system has been designed to support millions of users in each location.
