Westpac Banking Corporation has warned customers about a new hoax email and website doing the rounds.
An email, which purports to be from Westpac Online Banking, has been sent to some customers with the following message:
"Within Westpac latest security checks, we recently discovered that today there were three incorrect login attempts to your account. For your safety, Westpac set your account status to limited.
"This is an automatic message. We inform you as our customer that we have limited your account for security reasons."
The email also contains a hyper link which if clicked takes customers to a fake or ghost website. Westpac Bank Australia tweeted today that the email is a hoax and customers should delete it.
A Westpac spokeswoman said in a statement that it regularly informs customers of these types of malicious spam emails.
"We also provide security guidance to help customers protect themselves from such threats through social media and our website," she said.
