Australia Post has announced it will start delivering its secure digital mailboxes to customers in the next few months, following the official launch of the mailbox five months ago.
Chief executive Ahmed Fahour said the free digital mailboxes would allow Australians to receive mail from governments and businesses and do their banking over a secure website.
"This is effectively you letterbox, your filing cabinet and your bank account but seamlessly combined in a secure online environment," he told a business lunch in Sydney on Thursday.
"We have hundreds of our employees trialling it with corporate customers and we hope to launch this in coming months to all Australians."
Australia Post would also be rolling out more of its 24/7 parcel lockers in coming months.
Ahmed said there were already 50 of the lockers across the country and Australia Post hoped to have a further 200 within the next couple of years.
"The idea [is] that we're focused on is that 75 per cent of the population will be within a 10 minute drive, either from work or at home, of these lockers," he said.
Ahmed said Australia Post was benefiting from an increased number of parcel deliveries due to the growing popularity of Internet shopping as traditional mail volumes continuing to decline.
"Over the last three years our parcel volume has grown by 10 per cent per annum driven by online shopping," he said.
While some Australian retailers complained about losing sales to overseas shopping sites, Ahmed said most online purchases were from local businesses.
"Three out of four items bought by Australians online are purchased on domestic websites despite all the rhetoric about international," he said.
Australia Post launched its Digital Mailbox in October last year as part of the government-owned company’s $2 billion investment in digitising its communications and delivery mail network.
Companies that have signed up with the digital mail service include Telstra, AMP, Westpac, ANZ and National Australia Bank.
However, Gartner analyst Steve Bittinger has said the company's investment in the service is speculative.
"Google and everyone else are giving away free mailboxes, and the question is 'why not use my existing Gmail account of Hotmail of whoever?'" he has previously said.
"[Australia Post is] going to invest money in it and nobody knows if it’s going to pay off at this point -- it’s impossible to tell."
Last year, Australia Post was embroiled in a lawsuit with Digital Post Australia (DPA). Australia Post filed suit early in 2012 alleging that DPA's name was too similar to its own, but the court found the suit was without merit.
Australia Post will use Telstra’s Australian-based cloud to help deliver its Digital Mailbox.
