The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is looking for a supplier of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) speed detection devices as part of a state-wide speed management program, according to tender documents published this month.
The QPS program is designed to improve road safety and reduce excessive speed related crashes.
The supplier will need to provide full training, including manuals, for police officers and technical staff in the use and operation of the LIDAR speed detection devices. The QPS also requires specific pricing for the devices including accessories and level of warranty/repairs of the equipment. In addition, the supplier should provide details of extended warranty options and pricing.
According to QPS, the LIDAR devices will need to work in a number of conditions including poor light and at night time.
“Units must be capable of detecting and displaying in a digital readout the speed of target vehicles when operated by a police officer from a stationary position,” it said.
The QPS added that devices should incorporate an automatic lock control function, which when activated, will automatically retain the displayed speed of the vehicle.
The contract is for a minimum of five years with the option of an extension to 10 years. The invitation of offer closes on 15 March 2013.
