Sony To Commercialize Next Generation Optical Disc Archive Storage System

Sony is to commercialize a next-generation optical disc archive storage system that may move the industry towards the development of new mass storage optical disc archive solutions. The company has already announced plans to popularize the storage system with companies in the industry. The next generation optical disc storage system is better than existing systems. According to Sony, the new storage system delivers better over the long run in terms of storage capacity and durability.Sony lost $US6.4 billion last fiscal year, over twice its earlier forecast.

The system can withstand changes in temperature and humidity, as well as being dust and water resistant. Sony’s new system also includes intergenerational compatibility that lets users utilize past data without having to re-archive copies. The company plans to commercialize a range of optical disc media for archive storage solutions by fall this year. Through the Optical Disc Archive Advisory Group, Sony plans to bring in partners for further development of the video image archive solutions market.

The group will drive collaborative innovation aimed at anticipating future trends and demand in the storage solutions market. Sony also announced it plans to collaborate with other industry partners in robotics (automated media exchange systems), middleware (hierarchical storage management and control) and application software for media asset management (including media management and search) for the purpose of developing system solutions for media archive applications. Recently, Sony unveiled a new SmartWatch that allows users to check smartphone information without taking their phone out of the bag or pocket.
