Virgin Blue IT outage hit profit by up to $20m

Airline Virgin Blue Holdings (ASX:VBA) has revealed that a complete outage of its reservations and check-in systems last month harmed profit by up to $20 million.

The company said it would be “actively pursuing all avenues to recover this cost,” suggesting it may seek compensation from Accenture.

Virgin Blue's reservations and related operating systems, which are hosted by Accenture and its subsidiary Navitaire, went down on September 26.

The outage severely interrupted the Virgin Blue business for a period of 11 days, but were restored to normal on October 6, the company said.
