Optus associate Bharti Airtel has closed the US$10.7 billion ($13.02 billion) acquisition of the Zain Group's African operations.

Bharti, an Indian operator which is 30.4% owned by Optus parent SingTel, arranged to acquire Zain's mobile operations in 15 African countries.

The African operations have a total existing customer base of over 42 million, and the overall telecom penetration in the areas is just 32%.

Bharti said it now has a footprint that covers over 1.8 billion people, and operates in 18 countries across Asia and Africa.
