2degrees welcomes regulation of MTRs

New Zealand mobile operator 2degrees has welcomed a decision by the nation’s Commerce Commission to regulate mobile termination rates (MTRs) – against the wishes of incumbents Telecom NZ and Vodafone NZ.

“MTRs are regulated in almost all OECD countries and are tumbling around the world to ensure strong competition,” 2degrees COO Bill McCabe said. “Consumers should expect the same in NZ.”

Both Telecom and Vodafone offered voluntary undertakings to reduce MTRs in an effort to stave off regulation.

But the Commerce Commission in a draft view recently said the minister should regulate MTRs instead.
