NewSat in talks over Jabiru-1 satellite launch

Satellite operator NewSat has announced that it met with multiple international space companies in January in preparation for the launch of the Jabiru-1 satellite.

The company said the satellite will be Australia’s first independent next-generation satellite, and will cover Australia, South East Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

NewSat plans to launch the Jabiru-1 in the final quarter of 2012, in advance of the expected NBN satellite initiatives.

A complete strategy, including partners and a funding plan, will be unveiled before June 30, NewSat said. The company also expects to have pre-sold at least 50% of the transponders by that date.

NewSat’s satellites currently cover 75% of the world, the company added.
