The chief of Zendesk's local operation, Michael Hansen, says the helpdesk software-as-a-service provider wants to "double everything" over the next 12 months. "We're going to double everything here in Australia," the company's Asia-Pacific managing director said. "Double the customers, double the development centre, double our revenue."
Zendesk has signed up more than 1530 customers in Australia since the company launched in Australia in September 20111, Hansen said. A statement issued this morning announced that the 1500 Australian customer was clothing retailer Cotton On.
Much of the growth has been in the small-to-medium business segment, though Hansen said a significant portion of Zendesk's customer base was organsations within larger enterprises, including telcos and supermarket chains. Hansen said an analogy could be made with the rise of BYOD within enterprises. "I like to think that it's a bit like people bringing in their iPads and iPhones to work," he said.
Within some larger enterprises, Zendesk "has a bridgehead in there", and the company has hired a sales director from an enterprise background to follow-up existing customers to see if Zendesk can expand throughout those businesses.
Zendesk opened a Melbourne-based development centre late last year, and Hansen said that the "first two deliverables" to come out of it "have been very successful ". The staff at the development centre have completed Zendesk integration for eBay's Magento ecommerce platform and the Australian-developed Bigcommerce platform.
