Complacency has no takers in IT. Technology, by its very nature, is a sign of progress and that means IT leaders can't rest on their laurels. They need to constantly develop their skills to stay relevant. Shweta Rao spoke to Srinibash Sahoo, SVP and head-technology, DSP BlackRock Investment Managers, to find out how he's doing just that.
What are the most critical factors for a CIO to perform consistently?
There are two factors: Personal growth and environmental influence. A glimpse of it can be seen in how CIOs manage their teams. CIOs, who believe in freedom of thought, will encourage their team members to innovate. CIOs must realize that their team members contribute the most to their success.
How should CIOs invest in their development to ensure they stay relevant?
The role of a CIO has faced unprecedented scrutiny. So, to stay relevant, CIOs must align their needs with business demands. CIOs must focus on understanding new technology and acquiring technical knowledge on a day-to-day basis. Attending seminars, collecting journals, and interacting with technology peers--all this must culminate into a strategic plan that puts knowledge into effect. Also, CIOs must conduct self-assessment tests to gauge their skills for their current and future roles.
What's your mantra to be a successful CIO?
I prepare myself for a transition period--when moving to a new role or organization--to validate existing ideas and to make mistakes as I learn the ropes. Then, I refine my vision by gathering facts, risks, and barriers to IT's success. I also highlight IT's effectiveness in internal IT- and business-led initiatives. My mantra to thrive is to be ready to don the many hats that I'm expected to wear. And finally, I don't forget to communicate early and often.
