Top Ten Viruses & Hoaxes Reported To Sophos In December 2004

 • 10 January, 2005 17:09

Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against spam and viruses, has published a report revealing the top ten viruses and hoaxes causing problems for businesses around the world during the month of December 2004.

The report, compiled from Sophos's global network of monitoring stations, shows that a new worm called Zafi-D, which appeared in mid-December, has knocked Netsky-P – 2004's most prevalent threat – from the top position.

The top ten viruses in December 2004 were as follows:

1. W32/Zafi-D 36.8% NEW ENTRY

2. W32/Sober-I 20.7%

3. W32/Netsky-P 15.5%

4. W32/Zafi-B 8.6%

5. W32/Netsky-D 2.8%

6. W32/Netsky-Z 2.5%

7. W32/Bagle-AA 2.0%

8. W32/Netsky-B 1.7%

9. W32/Netsky-AD 1.2%

10. W32/MyDoom-O 1.0%

Others 7.2%

“Once again, Zafi causes global stress, yet Australia and New Zealand hardly saw any of this virus,” said Paul Ducklin, Head of Technology, Asia Pacific for Sophos. “This shows that regional variations in the virus problem still occur, despite the global nature of the internet.”

“Of course, lots of Aussies have been on their summer hols recently and many return to work this week to face a three-week email backlog. It's easy to let your guard down or to become careless when you have a lot of email to catch up on, especially when some of those emails are genuine Christmas greetings from friends or family. So stay alert!”

Sophos analysed and protected against 964 new viruses in December. The total number of viruses Sophos now protects against is 98,499. Sophos research shows that over 5.6%, or one in 18 emails, circulating during the month of December were viral. This figure is the same as that for November.
