Clemson University CIO Jim Bottum has been named Internet2's first Presidential Fellow, a post that will entail serving as a liaison between Internet2 and the research community, other CIOs, government agencies and others.

Bottum will remain CIO and vice provost for computing & information technology at Clemson, but devote a chunk of his time to the Internet2 job, which will also include working with Internet2's executive leadership team to develop new technologies and help the outfit obtain grants to fund its efforts. Under Bottum's leadership Clemson has become a leader in high performance computing (read our profile of the IT team and its entrepreneurial efforts).
Internet2, formed in 1996, is a collaborative effort by universities to use advanced networking for research and education.
Of late, Internet2 has been expanding its use of software-defined networking (SDN) and OpenFlow technologies.
