BT INKS DEAL WITH FINANCIAL TIMES

<p>Network takes newspaper into the future and cuts distribution and support costs by 20 per cent</p>
<p>HONG KONG, 2 September 2003 - BT today announced a £3.5 million contract with the Financial Times, to deploy a new wide area network (WAN), connecting its office and print sites across the world.</p>
<p>The network will provide the FT with greatly enhanced flexibility over the support and management of its global locations, and confirms the FT's competitive edge by increasing operating efficiencies and reducing print distribution and office support costs by 20 per cent over the first year.</p>
<p>Over the past nine months, the FT has been migrating all its print sites, currently connected via a BT Frame Relay network, to a consistent page distribution solution. In tandem with this migration, the FT has been planning the movement of its core network to a multi protocol label switching (MPLS) based IPVPN solution to deliver increased operational flexibility and reduce distribution costs.</p>
<p>BT won the contract following a competitive tender, primarily as it can undertake the migration project with a minimum of disruption. Its existing commercial relationship with the newspaper also helped secure the deal. The contract has further potential across a variety of planned initiatives at the newspaper through 2004 and beyond.</p>
<p>Ian Cohen, group IT director of the Financial Times said: "In the last 30 years, we haven't missed an edition - something we pride ourselves on. Keeping this record intact whilst migrating our core network to technologies that offer greater flexibility is vital, but we also chose BT because it can help us use connectivity to bring more agility to our business."</p>
