OpenMarket co-locates Sydney data centre to meet customer demand

Facility will link up with five global data centres

Mobile transaction provider, OpenMarket, has opened a Sydney co-location data centre in response to customer requirements for data to be hosted within Australia.

The facility, based at Equinix’s data centre in Alexandria, New South Wales, is already in use by mobile specialist and enterprise customers, and it has been open since April 6.

OpenMarket Australia country manager, Jonathan Morgan, told Computerworld Australia the company also chose the location due to close proximity to its Sydney head office. The company began its Australian operations in March 2010 when OpenMarket acquired the holdings of MX Telecom. It currently has five staff and two offices in Sydney and Melbourne.

“The facility is primarily for Australian companies who wish to have local processing but it might also be used by Asian customers who have the same requirements,” he said. “Over time, it will be used to replicate the gateways we have in the US, Europe and Singapore so it will become one of our six global data centres.”

According to Morgan, the company has gained many new mobile specialist and enterprise customers in the last nine months. “More Australian customers have indicated they will sign up now we have a data centre because it’s a comfort factor. They have everything they need onshore,” he said.

Turning to the Gillard government’s carbon tax, which is due to come into effect on 1 July 2012, Morgan said the company would not be passing on any energy costs associated with the tax to customers.

“We’re investing in our facilities to ensure the highest available uptime instead,” he said.

While the company has no plans to add a second data centre in Australia, Morgan added that it was considering opening more facilities in Asia based on customer demand.
