Optus' Krishnapillai moves to Australia Post

"We're not looking to become a telco" - Australia Post

Optus director of government and corporate affairs, Maha Krishnapillai, has been appointed to a newly created role with Australia Post’s retail division to grow its telco arm.

Krishnapillai, who finishes up with the number two telco on 30 November, announced his retirement from Optus at the beginning of the month, after three and a half years in the role, citing “personal reasons” for his departure.

An Australia Post spokesperson told Computerworld Australia that Krishnapillai had no official start date or title at this time but would be reporting to Australia Post executive general manager of retail services, Christine Corbett.

“He will join Australia Post’s Retail Services team to grow our existing telecommunications business as a reseller,” the spokesperson said.

"We're not looking to become a telco but similar to our retail stores where we act as an agent for banks and process passports on behalf of the government, we will sell mobile phones on behalf of companies like Telstra."

Australia Post already sells mobile phones and SIM cards in its 4400 retail outlets across the country.

Following his departure, Optus general manager of government and corporate affairs, Clare Gill, will be acting in the role in the interim.

The telco is still in the process of an external search for Krishnapillai’s replacement.
