PayPal has opened a global operations center in Malaysia, its second in the region.
The eBay subsidiary said in January that it was setting up the center to offer service and support to customers across South East Asia as well as provide operational support for PayPal's global payment service. The center was to hire over 300 staff in three years in positions such as customer service, merchant support and other operational support roles.
As PayPal's business continues to grow globally, it has decided to expand the scope of this facility to provide English-language support for customers across Asia, and increase the number of employees at the center to up to 500 by the end of 2013, John McCabe, senior vice president of global operations, said in a blog post on Tuesday.
PayPal revenue for the third quarter of 2011 was over US$1.1 billion, up 32 percent year-over-year.
In Asia, PayPal already has a customer support center in Shanghai in China.
The company said in January that it chose Malaysia for a global operations center because of its highly-skilled, globally competitive and multilingual workforce, coupled with a world-class business environment and technology infrastructure.
Besides the Asia global operations centers, PayPal also has centers in Chandler in Arizona, Omaha in Nebraska, Sao Paulo in Brazil, Dublin and Berlin. The Malaysia center already has 200 staff.
