Edith Cowan University seeks new CIO

The new CIO is to replace Garry Trinder, who will retire from the role in December

Perth-based Edith Cowan University (ECU) is on the lookout for a new CIO to replace Garry Trinder, who will retire from the role in December.

Trinder, who has been at ECU since 2004 and in the CIO role since 2007, plans to retire to make way for other interests including running for the local council and spending more time with family.

The successful candidate should be an IT professional suitable for a traditional CIO role who can lead the university IT team.

“The Chief Information Officer will provide strong leadership, vision and direction for the provision of effective and efficient management and work with key stakeholders for the delivery and operation of ICT solutions for the organisation, to enhance research and learning and teaching,” according to an advertisement on job site, Seek.

According to Trinder, the university always has a raft of IT projects on the go at any one time, with a pipeline of about 100 projects including the transition to a virtual desktop infrastructure and the upgrade of ECU’s entire network and wireless infrastructure to take place in 2012-13.

“Since I’ve been with ECU we’ve focused a lot on improving our IT governance, we’ve enhanced our student management systems, our learning management systems and we’ve implemented a project culture and a project office,” Trinder said.

“I think the culture of the organisation has changed, we have moved to a project culture as previously we were very technology driven,” he said. “I’ve got a mantra of enterprise led not technology driven so we’re responding far more to what the enterprise wants and we’ve incorporated that into our governance frameworks and processes in terms of prioritising supply and demand for ICT resources.”

Applications close 28 September.
