DSTO flags ICT upgrade following rain damage

The organisation has called for tenders after the previous infrastructure was significantly damaged by rainwater

The federal government’s Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) has flagged plans to upgrade its core ICT infrastructure after the previous system was significantly destroyed by rainwater.

The organisation’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division (ISRD) in Edinburgh, South Australia, employs the computing facility for “critical research activities” and now require a replacement for the damaged system.

“Recent inundation by rainwater destroyed a significant portion of this capability,” tender documents read. “The core IT infrastructure now requires redesigning and replacing.”

A spokesperson for the organisation would not comment on the incident or exactly how much damage had been caused to the former system’s capability.

According to tender documents, the new infrastructure will encompass a new LAN, storage (with 250TB of online data capacity), backup, supporting servers and a redundant facility. It will also require computing infrastructure for signal and image processing.

The contract will include the supply and redesign of the system, implementation of the new system and an additional three years of on-call support following the implementation.

“The successful Contractor will provide all required hardware, software, installation activities and act as system integrator for all aspects of the facility refurbishment, and then continue in that role, as requested, for the duration of Contract period.”

The organisation aims to have the replacement system deployed in the minimum amount of time and with minimum disruption to remaining services. Once the contract has been awarded at the end of November the DSTO plans to have the new infrastructure in place within a five month timeframe.
