Google still a dream employer

Search giant scores first place in survey of organisations people dream about working for

Google has been voted the number one place to work in the 2011 Dream Employers Survey, with another five technology organisations making the list of 20.

The survey identifies which organisations people dream about working for.

The six technology companies on the Dream Employers list were Google, Apple, Microsoft, Vodafone, NASA and Facebook. Facebook appeared on the list for the first time, placing nineteenth.

It is Google's second year in the top spot. Google head of people operations, Joe Krayer, said the key to the search giant's success was “to not look at programs in isolation, [but] use a multi-faceted approach to motivate and provide a culture that recognises employees”.

Thirty per cent of those surveyed said that workplace culture was the reason behind their pick in the survey.

“The foundation is our very competitive compensation package consisting of base pay, equity and bonuses,” said Krayer. Google gave a 10 per cent pay rise to its employees globally in 2010.

“We have in place robust reward and recognition programs, [where we] reward employees via excellent benefits and unique perks, such as massages, sleep pods and fun off-site events,” Krayer said.

The report found that the main reasons people chose their dream employer were to pay, benefits and conditions.

Apple came fifth on the list, moving up one spot from 2010. Microsoft rose five places from eleventh to sixth.

Vodafone dropped down only one place on the list, placing thirteenth in the 2011 survey, despite facing public perception issues related to poor customer service and network performance.

The report concluded that Vodafone stayed on the list because they have established lines of communication that allow employees to provide feedback to their managers and easy access to news of developments within the company.

Employed survey respondents ranked training and development in their top five improvement priorities. The top attrition drivers were systems and processes, communication and rewards and recognition.

The top four reasons why people chose their Dream Employer were pay, benefits and conditions (38 per cent), work-life balance (37 per cent), work culture (36 per cent) and personal interest (34 per cent).
