Telstra has launched the Mobile Device Management Portal, which allows IT administrators to remotely manage Apple iPhone and Android-based smartphones.
The growing adoption of smartphones and the increasing numbers of employees who access corporate data through personal devices has become a challenge for IT departments, according to Telstra.
Once logged into the Mobile Device Management Portal, an organization's fleet of mobile devices are visible. The number of administrative features available through the management portal depend on a mobile device's operating system, with some having more features than others.
Administrators can, for example, configure smartphone settings such as ActiveSync and virtual private networks (VPNs), restrict device applications or wipe a device that has been lost.
Besides Apple's iPhone and Android-based smartphones, administrators will also be able to configure smartphones that use Windows Phone 6.5 and Symbian operating systems. The operator is planning to add support for tablets "in the near future," Telstra said.
The advantages are much the same as any other cloud-based offering, Telstra said, in that it is quick to set up and makes it easier for IT departments to manage devices.
The portal is available to enterprises who subscribe to the operator's Mobile Connect data plans. Telstra didn't provide pricing information.
