Quickflix signs IPTV deal with Sony

Online DVD rental company Quickflix (ASX:QFX) has arranged to provide a subscription movie streaming service on Sony's range of internet-enabled TVs

Online DVD rental company Quickflix (ASX:QFX) has signed a digital distribution deal with Sony Australia, as it moves to roll out a subscription streaming service.

Quickflix has negotiated to provide a movie streaming service on Sony's Bravia range of internet-enabled televisions.

The deal will allow Quickflix to steam to every Sony Bravia compatible device. These also include some Blu Ray players and home theatre centres, as well as Sony VAIO computers and the 22 Bravia TV models launched in Australia.

Quickflix will launch the Bravia streaming service later in the year.

CEO Chris Taylor said the company plans to introduce streaming as part of its goal to reach a million customers in five years.

He said consumer demand for IPTV and other digital content was increasing, partly as a result of the switchover to digital TV.

Taylor was appointed to the CEO role earlier this week. He was hired for his IPTV experience, having overseen Telstra's (ASX:TLS) launch of IPTV services over the T-Box platform in his role as director of Telstra Media.

QFX shares grew 9.37% in Wednesday's trading to $0.105.
