Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will allow its most frequent flyers to check in using NFC-compatible stickers, the company said on Tuesday.
The short-range communications technology continues to gain traction, helped by, for example, Google's efforts. Last month, the company unveiled its mobile wallet service, which will allow users to pay using Android-based smartphones, including the Nexus S.
SAS, on the other hand, has decided to distribute NFC stickers, called Smart Pass, to users that they then can put on their phones. There are still too few NFC-compatible phones for that to be an option, according to a spokeswoman. The airline wanted to reach a wider audience, and in the process help move the market forward, she said.
The goal is to make journeys go more smoothly. Travelers will be able to use the technology at self-service check-in machines, to access lounges, for shopping, to validate destinations and at the departure gate.
The service will be available to customers with a Eurobonus Gold card across Scandinavia this fall.
