Melbourne Uni scores award for IPTV platform

NBN to provide basis for further educational projects

The Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society's Uni TV IPTV platform has received an award for remote education innovation. The award was part of London-based Global Telecoms Business' 2011 Innovation Awards

In a statement issues by IBES, research leader, Ken Clarke, said the Uni TV project, conducted at Melbourne University, enables the education of students across the globe.

“Uni TV provides a platform for innovation in the delivery in education across the world,” Clarke said in a statement.

“Uni TV enables educators, technologists and vendors to work together to deliver educational services across a number of programs.”

Clarke said the project, which Melbourne University earlier this year touted as having the potential to be more than a prototype, will take advantage of the National Broadband Network (NBN) to deliver many of its benefits.

“As Australia rolls out the NBN, Uni TV will provide the basis for other educational services, such as professional development of doctors in remote locations,” he said.

In March, IBES executive director, Kate Cornick, told a House of Representatives committee hearing into the NBN that Uni TV may be able to boost the number of international students studying at the university thanks to its worldwide reach.

Uni TV is set to be rolled out across a number of different sites over the coming months, with IBES seeking second round funding through the Victorian Government's Collaborative Internet Innovation Fund.
