iiNet subsidiary Westnet has delivered on its promise to roll out ADSL2+ services to homes in Western Australia under a $5 million broadband infrastructure upgrade for regional Australia.
The ISP has completed the Western Australian arm of the project with the rollout of ADSL2+ to approximately 8400 homes in Kalgoorlie.
The project has secured more than 1400 new points of broadband access for Kalgoorlie and will also encompass the rollout of digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) equipment across exchanges affecting 120,000 homes in NSW’s Hunter Valley and north and south coasts.
“Regional cities are crying out for faster broadband speeds and, with Kalgoorlie a longtime Westnet supporter, we knew an investment in a new high speed broadband network would prove popular,” Westnet general manager retail, Matthew Dunstan, said in a statement.
“By building our own high speed broadband network, we can offer better value and bigger quotas as well as our new internet television service, FetchTV. In a Kalgoorlie first, residents can now access high-definition digital subscription television over their broadband connection.”
A spokesperson for Westnet told Computerworld Australia the upgrade was facilitated directly by the regional upgrade link between Adelaide and Perth under the government’s $250 million Regional Backbone Blackspots Program (RBBP).
“The fact that we can offer ADSL2 or super-fast broadband in Kalgoorlie is directly related to the fact that Next Gen is able to provide backhaul services,” the spokesperson said.
“I think it’s positive because what we’re seeing is with this program being implemented by the Federal Government, backhaul providers are more interested in providing backhaul services to regional areas, not just people like Next Gen, so we’re seeing some form of competition in provision of services which allows us to get to those regional areas.”
According to the spokesperson, the regional broadband upgrade is currently on schedule with sites in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria still in progress.
In February, the ISP suffered some email outages following a server fault resulting in 5000 of its 220,000 customers were affected by the fault.
Following the recovery of the services, the ISP warned that customers would experience a delay in receiving some emails.
