Groupon’s local iteration, Stardeals, has acquired Melbourne-based group buying site, Crowdmass.
According to Stardeals managing director, Alexandra Podeanu, the year-old site, founded by Ying Wang, David Wei and Tim Wu in May last year, has quickly grown in the Melbourne market attracting a strong following.
“We were very impressed with what Ying, David and Tim had achieved with Crowdmass,” Podeanu said in a statement.
“They were very much ahead of the curve with their concept and their execution has been strong. We’re pleased to have them as part of our team, helping to fuel our growth in Melbourne and around the country.”
Stardeals began operating in Australia on February 14 beginning in Sydney followed by Melbourne and Brisbane.
Crowdmass co-founder David Wei said the deal with Stardeals would enable the company to realise a grander vision for the company.
“We were also struck by Groupon Inc.’s commitment to social causes, from its foundation as social action site ThePoint.com, to its recent fundraising deal to support relief efforts in Japan,” he said in a statement.
“This is very consistent with our own vision of how group buying can be used to support positive social outcomes.”
