Queensland transit authority, TransLink, has delivered on a project to roll out a real time information passenger system, kicking off a 12-month trial of the $11.4 million Customer First project later this year.
The program, initially outlined in May last year, will deliver real-time information on bus locations, arrival and departure information direct to customers.
Queensland Transport Minister, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said the project was a response to customer requests for more accurate and detailed information about bus travel.
“This $11.4 million pilot will let TransLink know exactly where a bus is and how far away it is away from a stop or busway station,” she said in a statement.
"The information can then be sent direct to customers via their mobile phones, website applications and also displayed on monitors at stations, terminals, stops and inside buses or ferries.”
According to Palaszczuk, the preferred tenderer for the system, German transport company Init, has installed similar systems in Vancouver, Dublin and Dubai and will trial Customer First on all 124 Clarks Logan City buses which run across 27 urban routes and school routes.
Bus equipment will be designed and constructed in coming months and installation is slated to begin in November, with customers expected to be able to access data during the first half of 2012.
"This system will highlight points on the network which impact on reliability, help improve fleet management and allow us to better use our infrastructure,” Palaszczuk said.
TransLink Transit Authority, a Queensland Government entity, is responsible for improving and expanding public transport services across South East Queensland.
