New Zealand government calls for CIO

Strategic leader to head up IT for 'new' ministry

A new CIO role in New Zealand’s newest ministry has just opened up, with a job advertisement calling for IT leaders to apply for the position.

The advertisement requests applications from CIOs who are willing to help innovate New Zealand and provide strategic IT leadership.

"This new ministry has an exciting and ambitious mandate from government to help strengthen the science and innovation systems to support the development of a truly innovative, smart nation," the ad read.

In addition, the successful candidate would also bring science, government and industry together to create such innovation.

The role is a strategic one, with the ad stating that long-term outlook and business acumen will be necessary traits of the successful candidate.

"We are seeking individuals who have strong competence in their specialist field, and who are able to interface comfortably with senior management in providing proactive and strategic advice," the ad read.

"With an understanding of the ministry's key business drivers you will [be]... working in partnership with the business to identify opportunities to continuously improve and optimise performance across the ministry."

The full-time position, which is posted on Seek, is the second advertised from across the Tasman in as many weeks, with the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry advertising for a new CIO last week.

The advertisement comes as a number of Australian CIOs started 2011 by moving into new positions.
