Treasury cashes in PABX for VoIP system

Voice over internet protocol part of UC strategy

The Australian Government Treasury will soon be replacing its ageing private automatic branch exchange (PABX) system with voice over internet protocol (VoIP).

Department documents state that the Treasury’s ACT offices will be upgraded to include a new phone, instant messaging, conferencing and telepresence system.

“Treasury is seeking a solution that empowers its staff to self-service features thereby reducing the ongoing ICT support costs,” the documents read.

“This offering should include 20 wall mount handsets, 1300 standard user handsets, 300 expansion modules and 20 meeting room handsets.”

Peripheral devices, such as headsets, will also be replaced, with the Treasury intending to standardise on one model of wired and one model of wireless headsets.

The current PABX switchboard will also be upgraded.

“Switchboard operators require a software based console to support high inbound call volumes,” the documents read.

“The proposed software console is to meet the operator’s requirements for accepting and dispatching calls, directory searching, call queuing and reporting.”

This upgrade will also include the installation Microsoft Exchange 2010, new Nortel edge switches and additional power supplies for existing edge switches.

The system overhaul will complete the final part of the Treasury’s unified communications strategy, which is part of a wider move by the Federal Government to improve communications.

In November 2010, the Western Australian government introduced enterprise IP telephony services, supported by a scalable IP-based open network, to its Attorney-General offices.
