American Power Conversion (APC) has opened a new data centre demonstration training facility in Perth to help educate Australian IT professionals about going green.
Dubbed the Energy Efficiency Hub, the centre is the company’s first training facility in Western Australia.
The building houses a demonstration space that incorporates a modular data centre with hot aisle containment system (HACS), a dedicated wiring closet, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and associated electrical switchgear.
According to APC, HACS is one of the latest cooling technologies to significantly reduce energy costs by containing heat at its source, which minimises the amount of cool air that needs to be pushed into the data centre.
The new centre will allow the company to demonstrate how an energy efficient data centre is built. It will also be used by APC’s channel and vendor alliance partners for technical product training and demonstrations for customers.
APC Pacific vice president, Gordon Makryllos, said that APC has experienced strong growth in Australia.
“The opening of the energy efficiency hub demonstrates our investment in training and education for local channel partners and customers as well as our long-term commitment to the West Australian IT industry,” he said in a statement.
According to Makryllos, many organisations in the region are facing significant data centre challenges, which has driven an increased demand for software-controlled power and cooling systems.
“A number of companies are using outdated legacy systems and are consolidating their data centre hardware but still require more floor space,” he said.
“Organisations are also finding they cannot deploy new server and storage technologies because their data centres cannot meet the power and cooling requirements.
“Additional challenges including increasing energy costs and the possibility of a carbon tax is encouraging Australian businesses to adopt more energy and cost efficient innovations.”
The company provides a range of business and support services to customers in the financial services, telecommunications, mining, oil and gas industries.
In February, APC announced a move to containerise data centres.
