The Australian Indigenous Minority Supplier Council (AIMSC), the organisation responsible for facilitating transactions between corporate Australia, government agencies and Indigenous-owned businesses, has reported that its first year’s operations have exceeded targets.
The organisation, which also promotes the link between the bottom line and corporate social responsibility (CSR), has doubled its first year targets, reporting that $2.1 million dollars worth of transactions took place between its Indigenous-led business suppliers and private and public Australian organisations.
The non-profit organisation ended its first 12 months in operation with 45 corporate and government members — up from its target of 18 — and 53 AIMSC-certified Indigenous businesses — up from its target of 30.
AIMSC’s CEO, Natalie Walker, said the organisation had received far more industry and government support than had been expected.
“Participation in the program has been superb and we are very impressed with the number of companies who are helping create a stronger Indigenous business sector,” she said in a statement.
“The caliber of both members and Indigenous suppliers who have joined our supplier diversity program has gone well beyond expectations."
Current members of the organisation include businesses from the airline, banking, finance, technology, telecommunications and construction sectors
As reported by CIO Australia last month, Walker said the organisation is not a charity, but rather a "business dating agency" where customers including the Commonwealth Bank, Australia Post, Citi, IBM, Foxtel, Wesfarmers, NAB and Telstra, use the service to facilitate business and put Indigenous businesses on equal footing as non-indigenous companies.
“We are also pleased to report that the Indigenous employment rate across our 53 suppliers is 72 per cent,” Walker said.
“We are seeing a ripple effect where AIMSC’s suppliers are further strengthening Indigenous economic growth by employing and creating job opportunities for other Indigenous Australians.”
