IP Wealth’s Alicia Beverley Wins International Women’s Day Leadership Award

 • 04 April, 2007 14:11

Alicia Beverley, Chief IP Strategist and Co-Founder of IP Wealth – an intellectual property firm which identifies, protects, manages and monitors intellectual property assets – has won the 2007 International Women's Day Leadership Award. The award was presented at a gala dinner at The Gold Coast Arts Centre on 8 March. Alicia was recognised for her leadership and innovation in business, and her community work.

Alicia’s vision has seen her take a very different approach to intellectual property (IP). Alicia saw the need for web-based applications to be designed specifically for IP professionals. She is also committed to explaining IP clearly to her clients and thereby demystifying this important area of business.

Alicia is a long time member of the Department of State Development's Gold Mentor Panel, and serves as a director on the AB Paterson College Board and is Chairman of the AB Paterson Child Care Centre. Her community work also includes numerous formal mentoring activities with small business owners, Year 11 students during Australian Business Week and Griffith University students.

Alicia also donates her time to do pro bono trade protection work for STARS – the Screen Theatre Writers Studio – and charities including the Royal Blind Foundation, Koala Kids and Rotary's Shelter Box Project.

”It’s refreshing to be recognised as a leader in business. Innovation is not gender specific – both women and men can be innovative. Innovation is what propels a company past its competitors and opens up new markets. Intellectual property is what captures that innovation, which is so valuable to a business and must be protected. I am passionate about innovation which is why I chose intellectual property as my profession,” said Ms Beverley.

Mentoring was one aspect of Alicia’s work which brought her to the attention of the award judges.

“Passion combined with action is a potent mix which inspires others and gets results! I also believe that I can be a role model with a difference. Anyone can lead a business, but it’s when you feel you have an obligation to deliberately pass on your skills and knowledge to someone else that you become a mentor. Having someone identify that they can help you grow and define yourself as a professional is key to one’s development. In fact having a mentor can really fast track you to success,” said Ms Beverley.

About Alicia Beverley

Alicia Beverley is Chief IP Strategist, Chief IP Auditor and Lead IP Educator for intellectual property consultancy firm IP Wealth.

As Chief IP Strategist, Alicia speaks with innovative business leaders daily to ensure they keep their IP ownership high and their costs and risks as low as possible. This is achieved by discussing development and commercialisation plans against the backdrop of her proprietary strategic approach, “The 5 IP Tactics of a Successful Business”.

Alicia Beverley is one of only a handful of IP auditors in Australia. Her proprietary auditing technique focuses on scoring an organisation against Intellectual Property Best Practice, making key recommendations, establishing an Action Plan to implement change in stages, and discovery of all IP assets and liabilities. All audits include IP training to provide a context and fertile ground for compliance with IP Best Practice. What her audits have discovered time after time is that most organisations are not aware of the full breadth of their IP portfolio, which includes valuable and vulnerable IP assets that require identification, protection, management and monitoring. Another key area of concern often identified through the audit process is the incorrect purchasing of IP products and services so that ownership of these assets is not clear.

Alicia is also a prolific educator of CEOs and other business leaders in the country – no other institution or individual has trained as many business people as she has in this vital business topic. Since 1997 she has been the IP resource speaker for The Executive Connection Pty Ltd (TEC) and speaks regularly at business events.

Alicia has also authored a book on product commercialisation – “Make It Big! How to Make Money from Your Million-Dollar Idea”, published by Allen & Unwin.

About IP Wealth (www.ipwealth.com.au)

IP Wealth™ specialises in identifying, protecting, managing and monitoring intellectual property assets for its clients around Australia and overseas. Whereas traditional trade mark and patent attorney firms focus on providing trade marks and patents, IP Wealth first takes a holistic view of all its client’s intellectual property assets and issues by talking with them extensively about their goals and business plans. To establish a clear benchmark of assets, issues and compliance with IP Best Practice, IP Wealth offers the option of an IP Diagnostic or a full IP Audit.

Once IP Wealth has a clear view of the entire picture, it can recommend and carry out various actions, such as trade mark searches, trade mark protection, IP training, design searches and registrations, correct portrayal of copyright on materials, maintaining confidentiality in-house, commissioning IP from suppliers for ownership, and so forth.

IP Wealth™ has created IPETA™ (The Intellectual Property Education and Training Academy), the world's first intellectual property training academy for business people and their staff. Many of the IPETA™ intellectual property training programs are also the first time a formal curriculum has been established, such as its IP Officer training course.

IP Wealth is also a developer of web-based applications designed specifically for intellectual property professionals.
