<p>AARNet and Pacific Wave hosts DERCAP 09</p>
<p>Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 12 November 2009 – AARNet (Australia’s Academic and Research Network) will connect some of the world’s most acclaimed academics and researchers for the Driving eResearch Across the Pacific (DERCAP 09) conference that opens in Sydney today.</p>
<p>In partnership with Pacific Wave, AARNet will host a two-day summit in conjunction with the annual eResearch Australasia Conference. Luminaries at this event include:</p>
<p>International physicist and one of the founders of the Virtual Observatory concept, Professor Paul Avery from the University of Florida. Avery is a recognised leader in advanced grid and networking for science and currently participates in the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at CERN, Geneva. This experiment records key information about particles emerging from high-energy collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to unearth nature’s secrets.</p>
<p>Professor S. George Djorgovski, Professor of Astronomy and a Co-Director of the Centre for Advanced Computing Research at Caltech. Djorgovski is also the Director of the Meta Institute for Computational Astrophysics, the first professional scientific organisation based entirely in virtual worlds.</p>
<p>Dr Tony Haymet, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, and Dean of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences at University of California, San Diego. Haymet is also the co-founder of CleanTECH San Diego, a non-profit organisation with a mission to stimulate innovation and to advance the adoption of clean technologies and sustainable industry practices.</p>
<p>Professor Rod Tucker, Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne and Director of the Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES). He is also the Research Director of the Australian Research Council Special Research Centre for Ultra-Broadband Information Networks (CUBIN) at the University of Melbourne. Tucker is recognised for his contributions to emerging trends and new research directions for the future of the Internet.</p>
<p>Professor Steven Tingay, co-Director of the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy and Deputy Director of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR. Tingay is deeply involved in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) at a national and international level. His research uses interferometric instruments and software-based digital signal processing algorithms to study radio emissions from a host of astronomic phenomena including, relativistic jets originating near supermassive black holes, exploding stars and jets from binary star systems.</p>
<p>The event provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, opinions and vision for the future on a range of topics including astronomy, high-energy physics, geosciences, marine systems, climate change, green IT and Smart Grids. DERCAP 09 aims to drive collaboration between research groups in Australia and the United States and to develop an action plan to further support eResearch and collaboration through infrastructure and service providers such as AARNet and Pacific Wave.</p>
