Research Study Reveals Need to Streamline Business Processes as Key Driver to Investing in ERM Solutions
- 16 July, 2009 11:28

Despite the economic downturn many companies in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore are planning to spend more than $50,000 USD on Enterprise Resource Management (ERM) solutions, implementation and services in 2009 according to findings revealed in a market research study conducted by Business Decision Maker Intelligence (BDMi) and sponsored by Epicor Software Corporation (NASDAQ: EPIC).

The study, which garnered more than 450 responses in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China, was conducted during February 2009 with the aim of finding out users’ motivations and barriers to implementing ERM solutions and how satisfied they were with their current ERM solutions.

The research revealed that the main drivers for implementing ERM solutions were to streamline business processes and to conduct business globally, with more than half indicating they will implement new ERM solutions and capabilities over the next two years.

Respondents targeted in this survey were decision makers, influencers and recommenders involved in the planning and selection of ERM solutions in their respective companies. These companies revealed the top five priorities they would consider when purchasing an ERM solution are: 1) Breadth and capabilities of solution; 2) Flexibility; Customer/Technical Support; 3) Total Cost of Ownership and Scalability (tied); 4) Technology; and, 5) Vendor Reputation.

Additionally, the top five benefits they hope to realise from these investments are: 1) Optimise business processes efficiencies; 2) Business process integration; 3) Improve customer service; 4) Reduce costs for purchased items; and, 5) Better resource management.

“It is heartening to see this study reveal that business decision makers throughout Asia recognise the importance of technology in helping them overcome challenges in a downturn,” said Bryan Tan, vice president of sales for Epicor in Asia. “They realise the potential benefits of implementing technology now, which will have them ready to scale their business and innovate for the upswing—a key to their success in staying ahead of competition.”

Key Insights Revealed by Country

Across the four markets participating in the study, survey responses showed the most common end-user of ERM solutions are employees in manufacturing functions. Following are key findings revealed in each country surveyed:
China – Total cost of ownership was ranked highest in terms of characteristics that are viewed most important when purchasing ERM solutions.
Hong Kong – The main reasons cited for running an ERM solution were to streamline business processes and to conduct business globally.
Malaysia – Flexibility, breadth and solution capabilities are rated higher than total cost of ownership when considering purchasing an ERM solution.
Singapore – Though enterprise and ERM solutions have been widely implemented in corporate operations, investments planned for ERM are still strong; more than 70% plan to invest $50,000 USD or more in the solutions in 2009.
