Mid-Comp’s Odyssey to enhance Box Hill Institute students’ employment chances

 • 15 June, 2009 15:06

Box Hill Institute, one of Australia’s premier multi-purpose TAFE institutes, is joining educational organisations across three states in using the Odyssey intelligent ERP software solution from Mid-Comp International for teaching logistics students.

According to Kevin Le Poidevin, the Institute’s Program Manager for Transport & Logistics Training, experience in using a world class supply chain management system will enhance students’ chances of finding employment when they graduate. Other students, who already work in the transport and logistics industry, will become more valuable employees.

The Institute’s courses range from Certificate 1 through to Diploma in Logistics. Study options range from a 14-week Certificate III in Logistics program, to short courses for students doing one or more units from that package.

“Most industry players, those with five or more people in their warehouse, use some sort of electronic system, and students trained in using Odyssey will quickly adapt to these,” said Mr Le Poidevin. “We have students leaving Certificate 3 or 4, or Logistics Diploma courses who are looking for jobs, and experience in using Odyssey will improve their chances by raising their value in the work force.”

The Transport and Logistics courses are available at Box Hill Institute’s Automotive, Transport and Engineering Centre, at the organisation’s Ceylon Street campus in Melbourne.

Kevin has set up a small working warehouse and will integrate Odyssey into the RFID (radio frequency identification) system on forklifts, to give students full use of RFID and electronic stores. He is looking to introduce courses in electronic stock control, also using Odyssey.

He said: “The alliance with a support-based vendor such as Mid-Comp gives us the opportunity to take another step forward in keeping at the forefront of training in the wholesale, retail and logistics sectors. Under our arrangement, we will be kept up-to-date with Odyssey software upgrades, unlike many educational organisations whose systems soon go out-of-date.”

Kevin says he is often asked by people in the industry which logistics technology he recommends. Until now, he has been unable to respond to these queries as he has had no hands-on experience with supply chain software.

“Now I will be able to recommend Mid-Comp International for their support, and Odyssey for its ease of use and broad functionality,” he concludes.

Box Hill Institute joins the growing list of tertiary educational institutes in Victoria, NSW and South Australia who are using Odyssey for teaching logistics students.
