Slough, UK, 11th June 2009 – Expand Networks www.expand.com, the leader in optimizing WANs for branch office consolidation and virtualization, echoes the findings of Aberdeen Group’s latest research; ‘Application Delivery over the WAN: Acceleration Alone is Not Enough’; which highlights the evolving needs of enterprise customers as they face the challenge of more and more applications traversing the corporate WAN. The survey of 308 companies revealed that there was a 65% average increase in WAN traffic over the last year and that application performance over the WAN was the top challenge cited by 60% of respondents.
The research examines the best practices deployed by ‘Best-in-Class’ organizations for managing application performance over the WAN. This is exemplified in the report by Expand customer Targus, which is the only case study featured in the research. Due to global growth Targus was faced with bandwidth and latency issues due to escalating network traffic across its MPLS based WAN. Having evaluated several vendor solutions it chose Expand because of its intelligent Layer 7 QoS capabilities thus optimizing application delivery, doubling user capacity, maximizing IT budgets and extending available bandwidth across remote sites.

According to Jim Lasher, operations manager for Targus, “This solution not only addressed our bandwidth and latency difficulties, it has also made our network traffic much more efficient. The ability of the solution to do traffic discovery was a major help for us in determining what type of traffic was flowing across our network. With this information we were able to configure the QoS parameters on our MPLS network to prioritize our most meaningful traffic.”

Bojan Simic, research analyst at Aberdeen explained, “It is clearly evident from our comprehensive research that ‘Best-in-Class’ organizations see application delivery as a key enabler in delivering against strategic business objectives such as improved TCO, reduced network traffic and greater scalability.

“These organizations are taking a much more systematic approach, building capabilities that allow them to effectively evaluate the technology solutions that are available. Based on its ability to match the needs of the market Expand is well positioned to take advantage of these burgeoning opportunities,” Simic concluded.

“It’s gratifying to see that the Aberdeen research findings closely align with our evolving business strategy and technology roadmap. The research is consistent with the feedback we’ve had from our customers and reinforces the changing dynamics of the application delivery landscape,” commented Adam Davison, Corporate VP Sales and Marketing, Expand Networks.

He continued, “As WAN optimization has shifted from tactical nicety to strategic necessity, so the emphasis has swung from basic acceleration techniques and bandwidth enhancement capabilities to a more application aware approach that offers visibility and control of enterprise applications. The ability to monitor and apply application level QoS enables IT to effectively deliver business critical applications across an increasingly disparate enterprise workforce.”

The report concludes by recommending a series of ‘Required Actions’ to organizations looking to improve application performance, including the need for a multi functional application delivery solution; centralized management capability of WAN optimization appliances; the ability to be deploy WAN optimization functionality within network routers; and application visibility and QoS capabilities within a single integrated solution. Expand’s solutions address all of these requirements and more to help organizations overcome their increasing application delivery and performance challenges.

Expand’s range of WAN optimization solutions for datacentre, branch office, remote user and mobile workforce environments are available as hardware appliances, virtual images for virtualized infrastructures and client software for remote desktops and laptops. They all run on a single operating system and centrally managed by ExpandView, offering greater deployment flexibility and manageability. Its innovative virtualization capabilities mean that it can both operate as a virtual solution within vitualized infrastructures as well as being able to accelerate virtualized applications. Expand’s solutions address many of today’s enterprise challenges and IT initiatives including server based computing, server consolidation and replacement, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and satellite link optimization.
