Acterna Introduces New Level of Speed and Coverage with Multiple Port, Multiple Channel Testing for Next Generation SONET/SDH - ONT-512

<p>Hong Kong and Melbourne, Australia: December 18, 2003 -- Acterna today announced that customers challenged by single-channel testing of next generation SONET/SDH now have a solution in a new scalable instrument with parallel testing at the Virtual Tributary/Tributary Unit (VT/TU) level, the Acterna ONT-512. With the ONT-512, designers and verification test engineers of Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) have the ability to measure the performance of thousands of VT/TU channels simultaneously, minimizing the performance risk associated with relying on a single test channel.</p>
<p>Next generation SONET/SDH devices are highly integrated platforms and provide very high port density and port counts as well as the ability to support multiple SONET/SDH rings. These devices are much more complex than legacy SONET/SDH equipment and create new challenges for the design of appropriate test procedures. In addition, next generation devices integrate new technologies like LAN/WAN interfaces and services like Ethernet.</p>
<p>The ONT-512 addresses the challenges of testing next generation SONET/SDH grooming and switching performance, and its multiple ports allow the user to load/analyze line interfaces simultaneously. This elevated coverage helps achieve higher-quality results, as potential line card dependencies are identified. The ONT-512, with its multiple channel and port test application, addresses the research and development requirements of both network manufacturers and operators.</p>
<p>"With the ONT-512, realistic network simulation and full-load analysis is achievable, minimizing unknown effects under load condition that may occur when testing with a single channel," said Bernhard Mueller, general manager for Acterna's Optical Transport unit. "With an open, PC-based architecture, the ONT-512 also easily integrates into the customers' working environment and provides the latest and most advanced applications in an intuitive manner."</p>
<p>The development of new network components occurs in different phases, and the Acterna ONT-512 can address all of them. During the module design phase, it is important that the specifications of each prototype are met. This phase requires instruments that support various interfaces and conformance testing. For the system integration phase, the manufacturer must test the various technologies integrated into MSPP products and with its multiple channel and port support, the ONT-512 is a perfect fit for the test requirements of this phase. Finally, during the test-floor phase, the manufacturer determines the system's compliance to external specifications, including those of international standardization bodies like ANSI or ITU-T. The test requirements are similar to those of the system integration phase, making the ONT-512 a perfect fit.</p>
<p>Additional features of the Acterna ONT-512 include: advanced remote and test automation capabilities, easy integration into existing testing environments as well as automated environments with Tcl/Tk and LabWindows libraries, multi-user access and Linux operating systems, open architecture for further applications, and rack mount ability.</p>
