Nucleus Research Finds Progress OpenEdge Platform Delivers Measurable Business Benefits

 • 11 March, 2004 12:17

Study shows OpenEdge™ technology offers platform independence, faster development and deployment, lower DBA costs and more uptime, allowing business-critical applications to achieve positive ROI

BEDFORD, Mass.—11 March 2004— The Progress Company, an operating unit of Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq: PRGS), and a leading supplier of technology for building the world’s best business applications, today announced the independent findings of a Nucleus Research survey titled “The Real ROI From Progress Software.”

According to the Nucleus survey (www.progress.com), Progress Application Partners (APs) report that the OpenEdge platform allows them to rapidly deliver cost-effective applications and also helps their end users achieve a positive ROI by allowing them to run business-critical applications on multiple platforms with minimal day-to-day IT intervention.

“As part of its ‘Real ROI’ series designed to help end users understand the value a software application actually delivers and the best practices users are employing to maximize ROI, Nucleus Research conducts surveys of users of technology and reports their findings, typically without the knowledge of the vendor,” said Dave Ireland, president of the Progress Company. “Nucleus contacted both Progress Software customers and partners to conduct in-depth interviews about their experiences with Progress technology.”

All of the APs that Nucleus interviewed indicated that the ability to deploy their applications in customer environments without database administrators (DBAs) was a prime competitive differentiator and the main benefit their customers receive from software developed using Progress’s tools. The Nucleus reports states that on a database deployment, the ongoing cost of personnel is often one of the biggest contributors to a negative ROI. This echoes the findings of other recent industry reports (see today’s release on the Aberdeen Group Executive White Paper at www.progress.com).

In all, Nucleus identified four key benefits from using Progress:

- Platform independence: Progress' platform independence means that APs can reuse code and components on different hardware and software platforms without costly re-development time as well the ability to take advantage of improvements in database technology to achieve better performance without additional coding.

- Faster development and deployment time: Programming and database optimization is faster with Progress than working with Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server because the Progress development environment is fully integrated with the embedded Progress database.

- Lower DBA personnel costs: For most midmarket companies, hiring dedicated DBAs can be prohibitively expensive and can easily cause a negative ROI on an IT project. The Progress database delivers returns to Application Partners and customers because it requires fewer people to manage the database.

- Increased uptime: When an enterprise system runs with a higher level of uptime than previous or competing systems, users see returns from increased user productivity and reduced support costs. These returns also translate into lower costs for Application Partners that provide support service to their clients or that host client applications.

“We’re not surprised to see the results of the Nucleus survey confirm what we have heard from our customers for years,” said Ireland. “Progress delivers a rock-solid product with the lowest total cost of ownership, high ROI, and the fastest, most reliable database.”
