Extreme Networks introduces cost-effective Ethernet switch

Media Briefing
 • 06 February, 2009 14:37

Extreme Networks’ new Summit X650 stackable switch, designed to change the economics in data centres and high performance 10 Gigabit networks, is the latest addition to the Summit stackable switch family from Extreme Networks.

It is a purpose-built Top of Rack switch designed for emerging 10 Gigabit Ethernet-enabled servers deployed in enterprise data centres. It is also the perfect small core or aggregation 10 Gigabit switch.

The Summit X650 helps optimise new server deployments while providing a seamless migration path from existing Gigabit Ethernet-based servers to 10 Gigabit Ethernet-based high-performance servers to start the transition to the new virtualised environment, all this at an affordable price.

Summit X650 provides remarkable high-density for 10 Gigabit Ethernet in a very small 1RU form factor for up to 32 ports in one system and 192 ports in a stacked system. It offers two of the most advanced 10 Gigabit Ethernet technologies: 10GBASE-T and SFP+ to accommodate the needs both for copper twisted pair cable (up to 100m using Cat6E cable or up to 55m using cat5E/6 cable) and optical fibre based 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

The Summit X650 provides a smooth migration from Gigabit Ethernet to 10 Gigabit Ethernet by supporting Dual Speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 1 Gigabit Ethernet on its 10GBASE-T and SFP+ ports.

With its versatile design, Summit X650 provides exceptionally high-density Layer 2 switching with ultra low latency and highly scalable IPv4 and IPv6 unicast and multicast routing to enable enterprise aggregation and core backbone deployment for AC-powered and DC-powered (Future) environments.

As part of the Summit stackable family, it can also stack with the existing Summit X250 and X450 switches, providing unprecedented mix and match capabilities. The Summit X650 simplifies network operation with ExtremeXOS modular OS, used amongst all Extreme Networks Ethernet switches. The ExtremeXOS operating system provides high availability and simplicity with one OS everywhere in the network.
